    Subway Helps Virginia Fishing

The artificial reef theory has been tested over decades and proven to be a very successful way to encourage fish to gather in localized places. Many people only know about ships being sunken for the purpose of recreational diving but anglers have long been utilizing these area for great fishing. Many sport fish will gather under floating seaweed, around drilling rigs and other similar objects, not mention sunken ships, making for hot spots in ocean fishing.

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission became the owner of an additional 44 New York subway cars and added to it's long underwater subway train - the first underwater subway off of Chincoteague, the popular 'Misty Pony' story island. No you can't ride the subway but you can fish it and it is now open for fish business. The Commission heaved the subway cars off a barge creating yet another artificial reef that in time will attract the small bait fish by affording them a place to hide and then the larger predators searching for the bait followed by you, the sport angler, and you don't even need a token.

As with most states, Virginia is creating and maintaining fishing habitats from funds related to the sale of fishing licenses - no general tax dollars used.

The sinking of subway cars is not new. The first deployment occurred in 2001 off of Delaware with Virginia coming next in 2003. The 16 ton cars are hot steam cleaned and all interior materials are stripped leaving a shell to be dropped in the 65 feet of water 6 miles off the Virginia coast.

Critics include commercial fisherman worried about snagging their nets and environmentalists questioning the value of discarding rail cars, military vehicles, old ships and other debris as if the ocean bottom was some kind of underwater junk yard.

Those that have devised the subway car plan witnessed the change in South Carolina waters as an area devoid of marine life came to life and filled with sea turtles, fish, invertebrates, and plant life all in a year's time.

The alternative for these subway cars, military ships, army tanks and more is land fill or being stacked up and left to rust away. The ocean has it's way of decaying these items but they can also provide artificial homes to the millions of ocean life creatures at the same time. They do nothing for the environment stacked and stored on land.
