Will Fish For Gas Prices Shut Down Asian Fleet
Escalating fuel prices continue to rule the fishing industry both commercially and recreationally. Once being hard pressed to find common ground on any issue, these two competing sectors of the fishing industry are staring at each other while sitting at the docks – instead of fishing.
We now have a major East Asian shut down that includes several countries. They are staying tied up to the pier instead of working for free due to the high fuel costs and low product prices. So now that the threat of tons of Asian fish coming into the US market to replace the lost fish from US fleets missing quotas, the tide may be turning.
The world as a whole is in this fuel crisis together. No longer is it an ‘us’ and ’them’ problem that you can ignore if you individually are not feeling the crunch, you will. Does your job pay scale still afford you the luxury to drive to work by yourself? Still considering the big SUV as the replacement for your small wagon? It’s only a matter of time and the effects will filter to you. If $5.00 a gallon gas doesn’t strike a nerve them maybe, “Sorry no fish this month. Try back in August.” Or possibly, “No, although we do expect beef to come in by next Friday, but the price is going to be pretty high,” the counter person replies. Can’t happen you say? That’s what we said about $3.00 gas, then $4.00 and now $5.00.
The world economies are dependant on oil and with new players in the market like China and India helping to increase the consumption, up is the only place for oil to go. It is still an imbalance that is killing us. If all industries can increase as oil has, hey we’re all fine. Not possible, though.
So we suffer again at the hand of a few controlling this market. Many would like us to think this market is somehow different than those that we compete in daily. Too complex for the average mind to comprehend. When it’s shown that a $135 barrel of oil actually costs us $75 but is burdened with $30 of speculation money, $20 of taxes and more isn’t it time to reduce the burdens and flow the cost cutting measure to industry? Even a loaf of bread is trucked to you so continued high fuel prices will and are hitting the necessities of life. Of course loosing your fishing charter business or commercial catch business hits home pretty hard also.
Alaska is a major US producing state and has just announced that they have so much money from the price of crude that the state’s coffers are overflowing! The governor is attempting to pass laws to stop the state tax on gas and give each man, woman and child $1,200 to cover the high fuel costs. Now that’s using your head. Are other states experiencing similar overflows? What about Texas the largest producer of US oil. Surely they have enough in their states coffers to offer some relief to the state’s population. And let’s go one step further. Isn’t the US government making several millions more today in gas taxes than they were? Why not impose an immediate moratorium or a temporarily tax cut on gas taxes US wide? It would offer some relief to consumers.
The fishing industry is one that is in itself volatile relying on precarious and misunderstood stock levels, expensive equipment and good old Mother Nature for success. Adding abnormal cost increases only serves the oil market and not the communities that rely on the fish as a food source nor those that make a living plying the water for recreational anglers. Oh yes, the charter captains may not be a necessity but what in our economy truly is? After food, water and shelter the rest are here only to support our need as humans to expand, control and recreate. Wall Street is not a necessity nor is oil, but no one on Wall Street wants to go back to hunting and gathering life styles and in that oil has become a necessity controlling our daily lives and must be equaled in all industries to provide a fair market for all.
And this month's photo? A simple one: Name the fish from this really bad snap shot.
